This was a productive year for 22 year old Chinese bodybuilder Zhang Nu. The college student won a bodybuilding contest after following a rather extreme diet of 70 egg whites per day.
Zhang Nu, who lives in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, emerged victorious in the 168-centimeter (66-inch) classic bodybuilding category of the China University Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship. However, it was his extreme diet that draw the attention of bodybuilding and fitness society.
He started bodybuilding two years ago in adolescence, and has packed on significant size. A before-and-after photo shows that he used to be skinny. He told his local Hangzhou News:
“ One day, I sat on my bed, bored, looked down on my stomach, and saw a seam. I think it’s very interesting. I started to do abdominal curling and abdominal training.”
At his recent competition, Zhang came out, carrying only 5% body fat.
Of course he credits an intense training regimen for his success, but alongside training, Zhang also consumed 70 egg whites a day one month before the tournament, a diet that intrigued many as soon as his story went viral.
Zhang understands the extreme nature of the diet. Fortunately, his nutrition contains other protein-included products as through January and February, his diet included large amounts of beef, which were largely substituted for egg whites before his competition.
He understands the extremity of this practice, and would not recommend it for the lay-person:
“The absorption and utilization of protein in eggs is very high and digestion is fast, but of course, ordinary people do not need to take my menu.”
If you consider that each egg white has around 3.6g of protein and 14.4 calories it becomes clear that Zhang Nu consumes about 252 grams of protein and 1,008 calories daily just from egg whites. Many people are afraid of eating too many yolksas they are usually known for their low protein and high fat content.
That sums up to 7,560 grams of protein and 35,700 calories in 30 days.
